The Osprey Forum

All Unisa students registered for the Internet & Web Design Course had to create an online presence via the Osprey Forum - basically a blogging site for all students registered in the School of Computing. The forum is predominantly of an academic nature, featuring student participation and interaction related to course content. However, there is a "Social Cafe" on the forum where students can discuss virtually any topic of interest. Be warned though, only non-academic posts are encouraged in the
"Social Cafe"!.

This course is conducted completely online, where lecturers post important announcements about the course, and provide support to students where necessary. All students need to report back on their progress, by posting threads on topics related to the lessons completed within the course. This active participation page features all my posts to the forum. The central focus, though, is the platform for student interaction, for the duration of the course. The "virtual" interaction between students created a central location for students to communicate with each, despite their geographic location. I loved the interaction, co-operation and support that students and lecturers provided to me, without which this website would not have existed. It is amazing how "virtual" relationships are formed between people who have never met face-to-face.
Thank you to everyone for your support!

It's almost impossible to predict the milestones that the Internet will achieve in human communication a decade from now, as technology and ICT infrastructures create a ever growing platform for innovative and more interactive communication media. Revolutionary! It's hard to imagine how we lived without the thrills of the Internet a few years ago that is now almost a necessity and a baseline

FINISHED - nesting tables is a bit complicated - but I finally figured it out
by Ashiya-77252551- Internet and Web Design Sem 1
  2. Re: HTML: Lesson 7: Follow up - 5 weeks ago
Had to work through various files simultaneously before making sense of nesting tables - I now am quite comfortable with it. TIP: As you work through this difficult task, first insert the tags for a table in your text editor, print it out - figure out which row & cell will contain the nested table. Type in the opening tags for the nested table in your editor - again print it out. Now determine which where the nested table is positiones by highlighling the appropriate openining and closing tages

Done!! Lindy - I have also struggled with this lesson - I had to redo certain sections to understand the different css codes and style sheets. What helped me though, was making notes of the different style sheets and relevant codes & selectors in separate folders - you can always revisit the codes when you struggle. In the meantime continue working on your website and change styles and codes as you go along

Wow! You guys rock!! I cannot speed up my work, despite the effort I put into it. Time is just not enough! Mastering the technical aspects is difficult - I enjoy the practical parts. Great going, Rowena! I am so busy studying, working (I'm a lecturer by the way), juggling home, family and the kids' homework my husband feels that I have married the computer.

Hello Fellow Web Designers, I am the creative writing type - I'm thinking of creating maybe poetry of interesting writing pieces supported by applicable graphics - etcetera - I don't know yet! But, something like that! I wonder if this is okay? Anyway, I found an intereting Website that gives you some manual tags (codes that you need to type in) for various things like font and so on ......

  10. TIPS FOR CREATING IMAGE MAPS : MANUALLY FIND COORDS - 6 weeks ago
Fellow Web Designers, PLEASE TAKE NOTE: HTML: Task 4.3 requires us to create an image map for Swoop - but we were given the coords - EASY! However, I wanted to create my own image map - so how do you get the coords? The usual answer is with a graphics programme, right? Well, I found a great way to find the coords of an image manually (found the info online on: www.elated.com/articles/)

  17. ADVICE PLEASE! SOME QUESTIONS I HAVE FOR COMPLETING THE PORFOLIO - 5 weeks ago
ADVICE PLEASE!!! I have a few questions concerning the portfolio - some concerns might seem unnecessary - but, I want to be sure: 1. Must we add the records of our forum postings as a an HTML file or can we leave it as a word or PDF file - with a link from the Home Page of course 2. A Web Site's Home Page usually appears on the first page (e.g: www.unisa.ac.za) with link to the other pages, how do I do this?

  18. Re: Portfolio - Need some Clarity - 28 days ago
Rowena-72906189 - about fitting in the active participation list on one page as an ordered list - I suggest nesting tables (or frames if it helps) with the different section titles (e.e Introduction, HTML, CSS) as headers I haven't tried it yet, but I am thinking about it.

I'm glad I could help - anyway I'm really impressed- you have already completed so much of your portfolio. I am still in the planning stages - I have a topic - working on the colour scheme - have some content & pics - need to organise myself - & complete the rest of the lessons in the workbook.

  22. How should I present the Home page of my portfolio? - 17 days ago
I was wondering..... Do we have to use the home page uploaded for assignment 1 as the home page for the portfolio, or are we allowed to modify it? I have a created a new theme and design for my portfolio, therefore I want to modify the home page presented in assignment 1 - to be consistent with the new design. My URL will be the same, of course. Any thoughts?

I found that using pixels is the best measurement to postion elements. Neil: Does this mean that my page canvas should not exceed ?

  24. The active participation page - what format & style should we use? - 9 May
I know that we have to add a bulleted list of our posts on the forum - However, must we use "screenshots" of our posts, or can we just add our posts in a regular bulletd form (divided according to the 3 sections of the course and lessons the respective lessons)? Also, frantically trying to complete the portfolio Good luck to everyone!!

  25. Re: Some advice on screen size? Please - May 07
Hi Krystle, Try using a linked style sheet to position the image with absolute or fixed positioning for all the pages using the same image with the same position. I used absolute positioning most of the time and it does work after some tweaking here and there - sometimes leaving out just a single punctuation mark can mess with everything. A word of advice though - try linking the code to one page first to see if it works.

How do we announce submission of portfolio?
    May 09, 2011 04:55PM Registered: 3 months ago Posts: 153
This might sound a little stupid, but how do we announce the submission of our portfolio? I know our portfolio must be uploaded and accessible (working well too1) by the 13th of May - but should we send an e-mail to Christa Prinsloo again (on or before the 13th ) like we did for assignment 1, or must we post the announcement on the forum?

Rowena- have you used % widths for your css columns/div's? I'm struggling with this one. If I use a height of 100% for the page canvas - it limits the main content section. Surely, we can use a % more than 100% for the height & users can scroll down?
